THE COLONY'S TRADE.
QUARTERLY RETURNS. In the September quarter the value of the colony's imports was £3,216,891, and of its exports ,£2,806,823, as compared with £3,314,936 and £2,432,820 in the corresponding quarter last year, imports thus showing a decrease and exports an increase. Of the imports, £1,873,667 worth (as against £2,166,905 in the preceding September quarter) came from the United Kingdom, to which we exported £1,598,313 (compared with £1,475,828). To Victoria we sent £394,029 (an increase of about £140,000), and from that State the colony received £318,503 (an increase of. over £200,000),. From New South Wales we received £206,498 worth (a falling off of some £60,000) and sent there £384,639 (an increase of about £150,000). From British possessions in South [Africa we received goods valued at £678, but we sent there £170,424 worth (as against £256,574 worth in the September quarter of 1901). Canada, and British Columbia sent us under £10,000 worth, and received from New Zealand only £54 worth, a falling off on both sides. In trade with foreign countries the United States still leads, as our imports from there toUl £396,468 (against £312,787 last year), and we sent in return about £115,000 worth, an increase of £11,000. Of European countries Germany sent us most — £66,500 worth, Belgium coming next with £28,000, and France third with £10,000. To France we sent nothing, to Belgium exports valued at £201, and to Germany £3375 worth. Japan sent to New Zealand goods valued at over £17,000, and China £2915, and we sent Japan £22 worth and to China notliing. From Fiji the colony received goods valued at £108,553 (an increase of £32,000 on last year), and we sent there exports valued at £15,107 (an increase of nearly £4000).
