OLD-AGE PENSIONS.
MONEY IMPROPERLY OBTAINED. [BT TELEGBAPH — PP.ESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day. ' Recently Mr. Brabant, S.M., had an application before him from the DeputyRegistrar of Pensions at Auckland for the cancellation of an old-age pension granted in another district, on the ground that important facts relating to property and moneys in the Savings Bank had been concealed. The ruling of the Court was also asked on the point whether the estate of * a deceased husband of a pensioner should be made to- refund, owing to facts having been withheld when the pension was first authorised, double the sum paid. The circumstances were of such a nature that the head of the Department' instructed his subordinate to engage the Crown 'Solicitor to commence proceedings, but before the action was started a friendly consultation between gentlemen professionally engaged resulted in an amicable settlement, and the sum of £61, together with all costs, -was paid over to the Crown Solicitor, and by consent the female pensioner's certificate was cancelled. The facts of this 'case are made public at the special request of the Registrar of Pensions, Wellington.
