The Beef Trust is erecting for its headquarters a skyscraper building in Chicago, at a cost of five million dollars (£1,000,000). A GERMAN STEAMER SUNK. BANGKOK, 13th November. The North German Lloyds steamer Kelantau sank after collision with, another vessel near here. THE SIBERIAN RAILWAY. LONDON, 13th November. A letter posted ab Shanhai-Kwani in Northern China, reached London via the Siberian Railway in twenty-six days. THE EX-KING OF DAHOMEY. PAPvIS, 13th November. The Government has rejected the prayer of Behanzin, ex-King of Dahomey, to be allowed to return to his country. [Behanzin, after carrying on a' long war against the French in West Africa, surrendered unconditionally in 1894, and was transported to Martinique. A report that he lost his life at the eruption of Mont Pelee turned out to be unfounded.] ' LEPERS IN PARIS. PARIS, 13th November. ' The public is alarmed owing to the presence of nineteen incurable lepers in the St. Louis Hospital. [The hospital, a large one with over 800 beds, was founded in 1604 by Henry IV. for cutaneous diseases.] MURDER IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, 13th November. A verdict of wilful murder was returned against a person unknown in the case of a man named Haines, who was found shot in Centennial Park. The evidence at the inquest disclosed that deceased and a number of other men had haunted the parks at night, touting couples. DAMAGES FOR LIBEL. HOBART, 13th November. Mr. Mulcahy, Minister for Lands, has been awarded £600 damages for libel against the newspaper Clipper, which alleged his collusion with certain persons in connection with the construction of public works at Strahan. THE WAR IN BOLIVIA. NEW YORK, 13th November. The President of Bolivia is organising a force of two thousand to recover the Acre territory. LORD LINLITHGOW. LONDON, 13th November. The Daily Chronicle states that his medical advisers have ordered the Marquis of Linlithgow (formerly Lord Hopetoun) to take a year's rest. ACCIDENT TO AN OFFICER. SYDNEY, 13th November. Mr. Hazard, third officer of the steamer Warrimoo, fell down the hold of the vessel and fractured his skull. He ,ia not seriously injured. THE FIRE AT THE* ORLEANS CHATEAU. LONDON, 13th November. A defective chimney caused the fire in the Duke of Orleans's residence, the Chateau de Randan. One wing and one chapel were saved, and most of the paintings and art treasures were rescued. A CANADIAN PACIFIC ENVOY. SYDNEY, 13th November. Mr. Stitt, representative of the Cana-dian-Pacific Railroad and Canadian-Aus-tralian Mail Line, was a passenger by the Waikare, which sailed to-night for Auckland. THE QUEENSLAND MURDERERS. 5 BRISBANE, 13th November. A petition is being signed in favour of the Kennifs, who were last week condemned .to death for murder. A SOCIAL PURITY MOVEMENT. ' BERLIN, 13th November. Seventy-one Royal German ladies, including two Queens, have established a society for the elevation of public morality. They have appealed for funds to establish homes for fallen women.
