OIL FOR ROADWAYS GAINING FAVOUR.

I Tho San Francisco Mining and EnI gineering Review states that oil has become quite an important factor in the making of roads in the United States. , It is used extensively on the country roads of California, 'and in the cities (continues "our contemporary) it has been adopted for park roads and boulevards. By the une of oil, roads are rendered smooth and dustless and hundreds of dollars are saved annually by municipalities nnd counties, for oil is tar more economical than the continual sprinkling of .water on the highways. When a solid surface is once formed by the interl mingling of oil and surface earth, roadI ways are easily and cheaply kept In fine condition all the year round. There is no mud in winter, no dust in summer, and by regularly sprinkling, a road as . hard and smooth as osphaltum may be ! obtained. The first application, whioh is the most expensive, should, bo generous and made after the road lias been ploughed, so that the intermingling of the earth and oil may be thorough, nnd thus a good asphalt foundation laid for the roadway. After that one or two lighter applications per week will be sufficient for a time, then about two applications per month will suffice to keep the road in good order.
