A severe frost made the track* at Riccarton so hard this morning that no galloping could be indulged in till midday. Most of the horses engaged in the Grand National Meeting were out, but were restricted to walking and madium pace work. The Guard, Gannongate, and Haydn an in moit demand for the big steeplechase. Colonel Shilinski, who carried off the Victorian A.J.O. steepleohase on Saturday, recently won the Oaulfield Grand National Hurdle Race with 12st bib up. He was considered unlucky to lose the V.R.O. Grand N&tionaJ Hurdles, in which he ran second to Rawdon. It was after running into a place jn the hitter race Chat Mr. Miller purchased the Zalinski geldini;, and since that time he has r*turnecf his purchase money several times over in the stakes won. His latest performance is a remarkably fine one, and •tamps him as one of the beat hurdle horses ever raced in Australia.
