The Melroae Ratepayers' Greater Wellington Committee met last evening iv Godber's vooins, Cuba - street. About twenty members were present, and Mr. J. Wishart lock the chair. The following rusolutious were pussed unanimously : — (1) "That in taking a poll on the Greater Wellington question the Melrose Borough Council be requested to take a poll of the electors — not ratepayers only — seeing that no question of nuance is involved, such poll to be taken under section 22, Part IV., of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900." (2) "That the Council be requested to have six pollingbooths, as at the Mayoral election — tounely, the Council office, Brooklyn, Mitchelltown, Island Bay, Kilbirnio, and Rosoneath." (3) "That a deputation wait upon the Council in reference to tho foregoing on Tuesday next." Reports from the sub-committees stated that as tho benefits of the scheme, as outlined in oirculars, were brought before electors, they were almost unanimous for union^ ! The wisdom of tho provision made in the Municipal Corporations Act of last session that there shall be fire-escapes attached to private dwellings where the necessity exists was exemplified in the case of the recent fire on Onslow-terrace. The fire in that instance broke out on the ground floor, and the occupants made their exit from tho two upper stories by means of the fire-e£capes, which were, Superintendent Hugo states, undoubtedly the means of saving their lives. Abruan, debtor ordered to pay £9 7s lid within a month or undergo nine days' imprisonment.
