THE KELBURNE-KARORI TRAM.
TO TUB EDITOH. Sir, — It has beon suggested that the directors of the above tramway should discontinue the use- of the tail-ropo connecting the up and down cars, on tho grounds that it is not necessary for safety, and that the cars would be able to run independently of each other so that one stopping would not necessitate the other also doing so as at present. Whilst admitting that the proposed alteration would cause a little less inconvenibneo in the working, and to the passengers, I venture to say that it would bo a very great mistake to do away with the tail-rope. The small amount of inconveniouce caused by its use is as nothing compared with the extra safety and security felt by pasßengers when tho two cars are thus connected. To do away with it Mould cause tho public to lose that confidence in the tramway which they now have, and which is so necossnry for its success and popularity. With the tail-rope it is impossible for a car to break away, and although I feel confident that the brckes are a very efficient safeguard, yetthrongh carole-sncss or inattention ok tht> part of the brakesman, if there was no tailrope, it would not bo impossible for an accident to occur. It. iv to bo sincerely hoped both on their own account and also for the safety of those patronising tho tram that the directors will nob do away with the use of the tnil-rope. It is also to be hoped that they will build suitable waiting-rooms at the top and bottom of theh lino, especially at tho winter is now coining on. — I nm, etc., TRAVELLER.
