FIRES. [BY TELEGRAPH — O WN CORRESPONDENT.]
. MASTERTON, This Day. A Maori house was destroyed by fire at Lower Taueru on Friday night. It contained seven rooms and Was the property of Hori Te Huki, the well-known }hief. The house was insured for £175 in the London and Lancashire and Liverpool. A general store owned by Mr.. Smith and occupied by Mrs. Stratford was destroyed by fire at Tenui at an early hour on Sunday morning. The cause of the fire is a mystery: The insurances were £350 on the house in the South British, £200 on the furniture in the London and Lancashire, and £250 on the stock in the Liverpool and London and Globe. * Late on Saturday night the Fire Brigade was advised by telephone of a chimney fire at the Silver Grid in Cubastreet, and men were sent along with a hand-pump to put it out. Immediately afterwards some one smashed the alarm box at the Royal Oak Hotel, which compelled a general turn-out of the Brigade. It is unnecessary tp trouble the alarm boxes for a chimney 'fire when telephones ere handy.
