THE SPRECKELS, MAIL CONTRACT.
[BT TSLEOBABH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, This Day! Mr. Dunnett, representative of the Oceanic Steamship Company, who is now in Auckland, has received letters from Mr. SpreclUls with reference to the proposals of the New Zealand Government for an eighteen-months contract. Mr. Spreckels considers the offer v altogether inadequate, being considerably lower for a three-weekly service than he received for a monthly service with very much smaller vessels. There are also conditions in the proposed contract which are at variance with the United States contract, under which the Oceanic Company draws a large subsidy. These preclude the acceptance of the contract in its present form. Mr. Dunnett says the terms offered are not good enough to induce Mr. Spreckels to tie his company up. It is probable that ne will negotiate with the Federal Government, with a view to include Brisbane instead of Auokland as the first port ,of call. Meanwhile the service will probably be parried on as usual.
