CRICKET. LOCAL SENIOR MATCHES.

The senior matches Midland -v. Wellington and Phoenix /v. Old Boys were continued on Saturday at the Basin Reserve, under favourable weather conditions. MIDLAND DEFEATS WELLINGTON. The Midland team opened its second innings with a lead of 58, having scored 138 in the first effort, against Wellington's 80. The Wellington stumper was in good form, Robertson, Quee, and Williams all falling victims to him. The first wicket went for two runs, and five were down for 55 ; but the next wicket added, 41, after which the remainder collapsed for only 17 more, or 113 in all. This total was almost entirely due to the batting of Tucker, whose score of 43 included one 4 ; and of Holdsworth, who hit a 5 and four 4's out of his total of 34. Connell bowled consistently and well, and topped the averages. The second innings of Wellington began nearly as inauspiciously as that of Midland. Upham and Tucker opened the attack,, and the former, by shifting Quee up to close mid-on and throwing a ball well up, induced Richardson to give a chance whioh was accepted — one for 5. Gore and S. Hickson made something of ' a stand till Upham replaced himself with Holdsworth. The change wa^ immediately effective, Hickson giving a shortslip chance off the first ball and being, bailed with the second — two for 33. Gore, 17, cleaned bowled by Tucker, and Weybourne, 20, bowled by Stephenson, 1 were the only others to shape with much effect. Ashbolt stonewalled for five singles, but was somewhat unexpectedly bowled and caught by Hutchings, who h(id come on for a while at Tucker's end. Stephenson (who replaced Hutchings) and Upham accounted for the remaining wickets, Stephenson taking four for 14. The innings closed for 84, leaving Midland winners by 87. Scores: — MIDLAND.
