STREET WIDENING WORKS
CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION. The Compensation Court sat this morning and dealt with the case of Mrs. Lucy M. Gompton v. the City Corporation, a claim of £2000 for land taken at the corner of ftintoul and Kiddiford streets for the "widening •of the latter thoroughfare. Mr. Justice Edwards presided and the assessors were Mr. J. B. Harcourt for the Claimant and Mr. $. Lock'ie for the Corporation. Mr. Travefs was counsel for Mrs. Compton and the Corp'oratioh was represented by the City Solicitor, MrV T. F. Martin. Mr. Travers, in opening the claimant's case said that originally it was proposed to take only a strip of 16£ ft along ftiddiford-strejt, but later on the Council in'timatetl that it required an additional area from Mrs. Ci>mpton. Mrs. Qpmpton did not objfect to the strip of 16'£ft being taken, but she objected to the •Council taking land on which buildings were erected". Owing to the uncertainty to what area, was ,to be ' take^n, Mrs. suffered a loss of money, as one t oj her tenants, left, feariflig that if the VOouncil took larger area he would Be ufiabife to contihufe his business. A , p,ortion of Mjrs. Gompton's land was held 'By Messrs. Hawthorn and Crumfc, buildfets, oh lease for 21, years from I€pB. The Gbuticii had offered £1000 for the land it (Required, tog^tlter with the buildings ■HPpn. it. Evidence would be given to show that "ftae buildings and fenofhg alone we're wqrtfi '|1540. The land was valuable at the present time, and t£e buildings j couM with some alteration's be dMvorted into more valuable* premises for business purnpses. The claim was for tthe'Value, of the buildings (£540) and also f6'r the land' at £35 jfer foot for both .'frontages. , t Evidence was then given as to the (•value of tfie-property, Mr. A. L. Wilson, auctioneer, setting down the frontage as being worth £35 per foot, as claimed. Other witnesses gave similar estimates. -
