SPORTING.

♦ WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING. The Spring Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was concluded on Saturday in bright sunny weather, but the high northerly wind again made it unpleasant for spectators. The pretty and tasteful spring costumes of the ladies were the subject of comment, and gave the lawn and paddock a picturesque appearance. Bookmakers were again much in evidence, and did good business. Notwithstanding their presence the totalisator revenue showed an increase of £1233 on the figures for the corresponding day of last year. The sum handled on Saturday was £11,268, making 1 £21,318 for the two days— an increase of £1289 from last year's total. The track 1 was in first-rate order, but the wind was against any fast times being recorded. The racing was of a very entertaining character, and the keenness of the finishes reflected credit on the handicappers. Backers fell heavily over the downfall of Muscovite in the Petone Handicap, for the Stepniak gelding was looked upon as an absolute certainty with Bst 21b on his back. Half way up the straight he looked as Jhough he would win, and he passed Aide-de-Camp, but the latter came again in the last few strides and beat the favourite by half a head. Hokio was a warm favourite for the Hack Welter, and he easily accounted for the rather weak opposition, giving C. Jenkins his first winning ride at the meeting. Gipsy Jack and Jingle performed creditably, and Westerly and Puritana showed good promise. Sir George Clifford scored a double victory by means of his two sons of Clanranald — Cannie Chiel and Goldenmere*. Cannie Chiel smothered the field in the Pearce Handicap after turning into the straight, and won comfortably at the finish. Fashion, with George Price in the saddle, ran a slashing race, being always prominent, , and when he landed first into the straight seemed to hold a winning chance, but Cannie Chiel had then to be reckoned 1 with. The Shannon tackled Fashion at the end, and there was a good fight for second place between the pair. It' was thought that Fashion had gained that position, but the judge declared a dead heat between the pair. Tortulla ran a real good race, and when she moved up to the leaders at the home turn it was thought she would score, but her big weight harassed her in the run home. Dundas ran in front for a time, as also did Kahuwai, but both had had enough by the time the home turn was reached. Battleaxe, who, started favourite, ran in the rear throughout the journey, and although Gallagher rode him hard to get into a good position at the home turn, he was afterwards done with, and finished last. Robin Adair galloped on the heels of something shortly after the start, and fell, dislodging his rider (W. King), who, however, escaped with a shaking. An outsider triumphed in the Juvenile Handicap, Sunfish, a three-year-old filly by Far Niente — Cuttle Fish, scoring decisively at the end from Optimist. Sunfish, who paid a dividend of £11 6s, is owned by "Mr. Launceston," the racing name of a Wanganui lady. Optimist is a fine two-year-old brother to Palaver and Blarney, and ought to be heard of again. The Second Welter Handicap resulted in a boil over. Regret, who was the least fancied of the eleven competitors, jumped off well, and making all the running, won all out from the game Recluse mare Calceolaria, with Stockade next. Regret failed in her other two engagements at the meeting, and the gallops must have done her good. She paid a dividend of £12 ss. Goldenmere had a soft thing on in the Hutt Park Spring Handicap, making all the running, and winning comfortably. Fakir and Palaver fought out a good finish for second place, the judge deciding in favour of Fakir. Reclaimer proved himself a good one by the way he "donkey-licked" his ten opponents in the Hack Flying with 9st 71b on his back. It was absolutely "no race" from start to finish, and his equal in hack races has not been seen out for, some time. He has now^won the amount allowed for hack races, and will have to move out of that company on the expiration of his present nominations. ' The unlucky Blackwing again filled second place, and her backers received a dividend of £2 6s 6d. Trade Wind put up a fine performance by running from last to fourth. The Castor— Bangle filly Ringlet had a- runaway victory in the Nainai Handicap, getting a break on the field which she retained to the end. The filly let her connections down, in her obhei? two engagements. Torowai had a bad passage in the race, otherwise she would have been closer. As it was Torowai and Muscovite finished a dead heat " for second place. Stepina got badly off the mark, and her chance was spoiled. The concluding results are as follows : " Pearce Handicap, of 300 soys ; second horse to receive 40 soys from the stake, and third horse 10 soys. At the far turn Dundas still held the premier position; Fashion, Kahuwai, Shannon, Cannie Chiel, Tortulla, Battleaxe, running in the order named. R&unding the bend Dundas retired and Tortulla moved up. Calceolaria and Jewel Gun put in their claims at the home turn, Calceolaria showing a bold front. But her big weight stopped her in the lost furlong, and Regret won all out by a length and a half, Stockade being the same distance behind Calceolaria, and General Wolfe and Osborne n.ext.
