The annual meeting -of the Wesleyan Methodist District Synod is to open in the Wesley schoolroom to-morrow, at 10 a.m. The financial session will be held on Wednesday. The first shipment of this season's Southern cheese, -consisting of 1000 cases, arrived in Wellington on Saturday. After l>eing graded, it will be placed on board the Kumara. The Wairarapa factories are also shipping a large quantity of cheese by the same vessel. An important point was raised this morning by Mr. Travers during the hearing of the compensation case, 'Compton V. the City Council— viz., that the clause of the Act of 1897, which authorised the Corporation to take over more land than was absolutely necessary for street-wid-ening purposes, was drafted to enable , the City Council to make a speculation j of its purchases. Mr Martin, on behalf of the City Council, objected to the statement, but admitted, on the question , being discussed iwith Mr. Justice Edwards, that the Act might bear that interpretation. Mr. Justice Edwards .saids the words of the Act were "may take," not "should take." It seemed to him that the Council was guilty of what appeared to be spoliation in taking compulsorily the whole of a property, when it only required a few feet of it for widening a street, and .that such an expropriation could not be justified by the fact that the City Council was likely to make a profit on the resale. The • annual picnic of the Wellington butchers will be held at Day's Bay on Wednesday next. A first-class programme has been arranged. The Duchess will leave -the Ferry Wharf at 9 a.m. and 2.30 p.m., returning from the Bay at 5.30 p.m. . Whoever wishes to keep a secret must hide from us that he possesses one.
