His Excellency 'the Governor left for Christchurch on Saturday night. The prompt arrival of tho police on Saturday night and the drawing of a cordon round Messrs. J. E. Nathan and Co.'s premises before the man inside" could escape, is highly creditable to those concerned in it. Sergeant Norwood and Detective Nixon directed and were most conspicuous in the man-hunt. ' This morning tho Midland Railway Commission took the evidence of Mr. S. Brown, of Wellington, who had a subcontract under one of the English contractors for that portion of the Midland line from the Stilhvater side of, Arnold bridge, to the Reefton side of ' Nelson Creek. The contract price was £31,521 15s 3d, and aH that Mr. Brown got out of it was £353, representing I profits of about a- year and a half's work. He expressed the opinion that money was spent unnecessi^'ily by the company, owing to supervision being entrusted to a Swede who failed to' recognise the difference between conditions of payment for labour in tho colony and in * his / own country. It was intimated that other witnesses were on their way to Wellington for examination, and the Commission then adjourned its open sitting for the day. The local branch of the New Zealand Federated Tailoresses Union treated on Friday the delegates now sitting in Wellington to „a drive around the Queen's Drive. Tho party had afternoon tea at the Island Bay Hotel, and Miss Whitethorn, Secretory to the Conference, took ! this as an opportune moment to present to their Chairman (the Hon. John Rigg) on behalf of the delegates, a pocket-book and gold fountain pen, as a mark of their appreciation of him as their Chairman. The hon. gentleman suitably thanked the donors, and congratulated the Federation on having sent to the conference delegates who* had a clear anc 1 intelligent understanding of ' the work they were called upon to do. The great amount of business got through in so short a time was, he said, due more to their painstaking and able secretary, Miss Whitehorn, and the aptness of the delegates, than to the ability of the Chairman. The conference will probably finish, its labours this afternoon. Robert- Alexander Wright, of Feather-ston-street, was charged at the Magistrate's Court this morning with, having printed a paper — a "final notice to debtor" form — without imprint. Mr. Dakiell defended. In this case, and a similar one against E. J. D. Johnson, Dr." M' Arthur reserved judgment. Mr. D. D. Hyde, the Government Poultry Expert is back in town after a lecturing tour in the North, having fon its object the encouragement of what is now getting recognised as a growing and profitable industry. In the course of his lectures Mr. Hyde has advanced cogent reasons for 4 .this colony paying • greater attention to poultry and egg-raising. Recently a demand was made for poultry for export to South Africa^ and it war found impossible to fulfil the order. This, the considers, is nothing short of a scandal. As proof of the profits of the industry, he quoted the case of a young Aucklander, a woman, who last year netted £50 from 200 Minorca hens, and this in the Avorst egg market in the colony. The Seacliff Asylum authorities last year made over £250 profit from the sale of eggs raised on a run of eight acres. However, people are awakening to the fact that there is money in poul-try-raising, and the demand for birds' from the Government farm at Momohaki is greater than the supply, over 1000 fowls and ducks having been ordered this season. With regard to the export trade, the Government is doing all it can to further it, and Mi*. Hyde believes that farmers sending eggs to the London market would realise at least 50 per cent! more than they would by selling them in the colonial markets. A concert is announced to be given tomorrow night in St. John's Schoolroom. Madame Muller, Mrs. Ross, •>- Masses Johuston, Billman, Mr/M'Gflashan, and other we!J-known vocalists and instrumentalists will contribute to the progratnmen. At the Magistrate's Court this afternoon George Kelly was fined £1, 'with costs 7s, for giving an unstamped receipt for £2 10s. His explanation was that he gave the receipt in Newtown Park, and had no stamps on him at the time ; also that the man to whom he gave the receipt promised to stamp it. The annual meeting of the Patent Slip Company lapsed to-day for want of a quorum. Tho attention of members of the Ath letic Football Club is called to an advertisement appearing in to-night's Post Heading our Wanted column Messrs. Warnock and Adkin have a now advertisement giving a prico-list at which thoy aro prepared to make 75 Bilk reception dresses. Messrs. Scoullar and Chisholm, furniture dealers, have a now advertisement , over the leader, in which thoy bring beforo the publio tho lines on which they 1 run their, eusinesi.
