Councillors Muir and Scott and Mr. J. Braithwaite "have been returned unopposed for the High Ward. There is a contest for all t3_e other city wards. la connection with the question of the route for the coming Royal procession, which lias given rise to some difference of opinicm, the Premier inspected parts of the proposed route to-day with the Mayor of Wellington and members of the citizen's, committee-, and will communicate with, the Governor on the subject. 7i'he Premier has received a cablegram from Colonel Banks, of the Sixth Contingent, stating that he and his men, arrived at Pietersburg on the Bth inst., flll well. This aiternoon Dr. M* Arthur sentenced Sinclair Smith, alias Fuller, to twelve months' imprisonment for obtaining £6 from Oliver Mackley by false pretences. Four out of the five prisoners who were brought up for sentence before the Chief Justice to-day attributed their presentposition to drink. ■ The steamer Royalist now in port is something of an oddity in the shipbuilding line. She is of the turret pattern, which being interpreted means that instead of widening gradually up to the deck, she suddenly narrows' in from just abaft the bows right along to the stern, while the deck itself stands- up in the centre and is considerably narrower than the total width of the ship. This, it is claimed, gives her a. greater carrying capacity than usual in proportion to her registered tonnage— in her case something like 5300 tons capacity to 2000 tonnage. Below the i deck the protruding sides of the vessel form a sort of ledge, on which a considerable quantity of timber or like cargo can bo carried. The deck spaceis, of course, cramped. Asked "How do you walk up and down here?" an officer of the vessel repliedy "Well, we just don't." At a meeting of the Forty-mile Bush sawmillers held last week, it was decided to increase the* price of red pine timber by 8d per 100 ft.
