FIRES IN THE CITY. DEFECT IN THE WATER SUPPLY.
The Fire Brigado was called out at four miuutes past 9 o'clock this morning to a five in Upper Hankey-street. Through a dciectivo chimney in a washhouse, a house of about seven rooms, owned and occupied by Mr. lvenyon Travers, was damaged on ono side, and over a portion of the inside, by tire and water. Thanks to the wretched state of tho water supply on tho high levels of the city, the brigade had to wait for some minutes after itsarrival before water was available. Once' the pressure was the fire was' promptly extinguished. The da*mage to the building is not great, and is covered' by the £oui) policy in the United office. .The contents were nob insured. At 6.27 last evening the brigado was called to a four-roomed cottage in Walterstreet, occupied by Mrs. Annie Scott. Owing to fcomo children playing with matches a fire had occurred in a bedroom, nnd the cou Lents were somewhat damaged by fire and water. The insurances were— £150 on building and £50 on contents in the Commercial Union. At i 0 o'clock last evening some person maliciously sounded a fake alarm from the fire-box at the Bnsin Reserve.
