The Federal Cabinet is offering prizes of £75 each for the best designs for a, flag and an official seal. Suitable designs will be forwarded to the Imperial authorities for approval. The Cabinet has requested New South Wales to take steps to facilitate {he selection qi suitable land for a site for the Federal capital, and thus advance the labour of the Federal Royal Commission which will be appointed to deal with the matter. A letter from the New South Wales Agent-General relating to Kerguelen Is» land 1 was considered by the Cabinet, and it w^as decided to request the Imperial 1 authorities to negotiate with France* for transfer of tho Island to Great Britain. Kerguelen is of value to the Commonwealth, being directly in the track of vessels trading batween Australia and the Cape. [The Island of Kerguelen Was discovered by a Breton sailor of that name in 1772, and was visited in 1776 by Captain Cook, who christened it Desolation Island. The climate is stated to be raw, and storms are constant: In 1874 it was visited by H.M. surveying ship Challenger, and by English, American, and German expeditions, to observe the transit of Vdnus. France annexed the island in 1892.]
