CURRENT LITERATURE.

With the December or Christmas number of the Windsor Magazino is published as a supplement "Mistress Dorothy Marvin," a novel by J. C. Smith. The story is of the stirring days when James 11. was making a vain attempt to establish Roman Catholicism and royal despotism in England, and its hero is a gently-born highwayman. To the magazine proper, Robert Barr, Israel Zangwill, Guy Boothby, E. Phillips Oppenheim, Barry Pain, Halliwell Sutcliffe, and E. F. Benson contribute short stories, while Mayne Lindsay supplies the first instalment of a promising romance entitled "The Whirligig." Among interesting articles are "Mr. S. E. Waller and his Art," by .G. F. Maynard, "Military Knights of Windsor" by F. Klickmann, and "An Incident of African History" by H. Rider Haggard. Tho number is well illustrated, and both pictures and reading matter are of a high standard of merit. We are indebted to Messrs. H. Baillie and 00. for our copy. In the January number of the New Zealand Illustrated Magazino is puolished the prize story for the ivew Zealand Literary and Historical Association's competition. The winner is Miss Edith T. Byttleton, and the title of her story "His Work Before Him." There is a further instalment of "Alien's" serial "Another Woman's Territory," and Mrs. Edith G. Wooloott supplies the second part of her thoughtful paper on "Australian Poets and Their Work." Among other contributions are the first part of an illustrated article describing "Explorations of Manawaiptfuri" by S. H. Moreton, a discussion of Edward Gibbon Wakefield's dreams by "E. F. H.," and an acoount of chiromancy by H. T. WestmacottJ The "poetry" is rather poor.
