MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. PUNISHMENT OF PEACE ADVOCATES.
LONDON, 18th January. William Steyn, a peace delegate, who was deputed to interview the Boers at Standerton, in the Transvaal, was arrested and sent to Piet Retief, near the Swaziland frontier, on a charge of treason. ■ • The systematic collection .of Boer families and stock at convenient centres is steadily proceeding. Voluntary refugees are given advantages over families whose heads are still with commandoes ir. the field. The refugees are mostly acquiescent to this course of action. A private cablegram received in town yesterday states that Trooper T. O. Martin, of Greymouth (Fourth Contingent) died at Pretoria, on the 4th inst.—presumably from enteric.
