Swimming.
[By Natatoii.] Au Adjourned meeting of the NewZealand Swimming Association was held at Christchurch on October 30, to consider the basis of amalgamation with th© Autikland Association. A subcommitted was appointed to submit 'to the Auckland Association and North Island Clutts of the New Zealand Association, the Views of the Council on the proposed basis of amalgamation. This season's Australasian swimming championships will be decided in Victoria, i Percy Cavill, the Australian swiminec* was defeated by J. M'Cusker, the American chanjipion swimmer, in a five-event match at Boston. The American won three events straight off, and the others were nob contested, M*Cusker is now * styled chfcimpion of the world by American papers, who base his claims to the title on account of Cavill being billed as champion of England and Australia. Ar a matter of fact, he is not champion of either country. T. J. ftuttall, an, English swimmer of high repute, challenges any man in the world to swim 300 yds or 500 yds, for £50 or £10Ch a-side, but can get no response. Thus says "Natator" in the Sydney, Referee :— What sort of a season have wq got before us? 'Twill be a memorable one, I'll , be bound. I can see with my mind's eye a great, an interesting, ex* citing struggle from end to end of 100 yds with Fred Lane, Dick Cavill, Jack Hellings, "Mud" Bishop, and Bob Craig, fighting out every inch as if very life depended upon the result, then a big blur, and the crowd cheering as crowd never cheered before. "Bishop l" yell 'some, "Lane!" screech others. "Hellinge!" "Craig!" '\ Cavill!" coma from scores of throats. Only the judge knows who won, and thfe din prevents him from be* ing heard. That blur stops me from see-t ing, but my ! what a close thing it was.
