THE LILLYWHITE CASE. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir — In reading the account of Lillywhite's arrest irt last Tuesday's Post one is led to think that he has endeavoured on one or two occasions to evade 'the police. One reference' will suffice. Jt reads — " Some two years ago, says Mr. Hewson, Blatch was seen in Wellington by a young woman with whom he had relations at Colchester, but although enquiries were made by the police the man succeeded in evading their arrest." The whole tone of the account tends to the opinion that Lillywhite knew he was wanted, and that time after time he managed to elude the police. I have known Lillywhite for about five years, and until within the last year, or less, I have met him on several occasions. So far as I am aware he has always conducted himself as a good citizen, has always been known here as Lillywhito, an American, and if he had been wanted by the police he could have been arrested at almost any time. If Lillywhite has been wrongfully suspected his position is as serious as it must be unpleasant, since innocent men have oflen had to suffer under the unreasoning verdict's of popular prejudice. Any one of us might find ourselves in a similar position at any time, and it is for this reason that those who have known him should say what they know, and do what they can in his behalf. I am, ere. GERALD TURNER. Wellington, 7th Nov., 1900.
