Eleven new members have joined the Engineers' Corps since the formation, and there is a strong probability of the maximum strength being reached before the company is out of the drill instructor's hands. The new iungo was so satisfactory that it was decided 1 to hold a contest at Waipawa permanently. 'The result was as follows: -Napier JRifles, 941 5 Napier Guards, 884; Woodville Rifles, 862Hastings, 839; HawJkes Bay Mounted TV-it ' Waipawa, 658; Dannevirke, 6^4 ; Ahuriri Mounted Rifles, 615 ; Ru«v hine Mounted R-iJies, 534.
Fifty horses which were bought by the Government for South Africa in ejccess of orders or of shipping accommodation were sold by auction by Messrs. H. Matson and Co. this week at Christchurch. The sale of these horses, without reserve, may (says the Lyttelton Times) be taken as an indication that no njore horses are likely to be required from New Zealand for the presept campaign in South Africa.
