OBITUARY.

MR. GEORGE ROSS

We regret to record the death of Mr. George Ross, who w,as for many years a resident of Wellington. The deceased was born in Scotland, and on leaving school was apprenticed to the engineering ti*ado. He cume out to the colonies in the early day*, and was connected with the shipping industry on the West Coast- during I;!*© piidiny days of the diggings. He afterwards cajnp, to Wellington and entered the Railway Department. For some- years lie was Locomotive Foreman in the Wellington district, and subsequently ho became mpro immediately connected with th,e gunning of the trains between this city and Eketakuna. Retiring from the service he took over the Royal (now Searlc's) Hotel, and later on he was the licensee of the Panama Hotel. About two years ago he purchased tho only hotel (the Tavistock), at Waipukurau, Hawke's Bay, and conducted it tip to the tiino of his death. Ho had been in failing health for some time,. ITir. Ross, who was unmarried, was, unM\ he left for Hawke's Bay, the President of the Wellington Licensed ViQfcuI allers' Association. He was a genial, kindhoarfced man, and was popular with all who knew him. His body is to be brought down to Wellington for interment at Karori to-morrow. As a mark of respect to memory of the deceased, who was a member of tho Institute of Marin.6 Engineers, the flags on the Wellington shipping office were flown at half-mast to-day.
