CRICKET
OPENING OF THE SEASON. The cricket season was formally opened on Saturday afternoon, when a start yah made with the various grades of championship matches. The coalitions were unfavourable, for a disagreeable nor'wester, bringing with it clouds of dust, made matters unpleasant for players, and' also for spectators, of whom there was a fair attendance. The wicket was on the slow side. The unusual quantity of rain during the past few we.ek# ha.d pub the turf in a backward state, and as no practice had been ppssiblo on the Basin lieserve until Friday afternoon, fl»e playera had little opportunity of cultivating form. As the result of the day's play, the Midland-Phoenix mafrch was brought to an interesting stage, and the Old Old Boys made a good show against the Wellington ClubV combination.
