THE C.J.O. JUBILEE MEETING.

This meeting is exciting extraordinary interest, and promises to be a boom gathering. It is looked forward to as the meeting of the year, and with the additional attractions at Christohuroh for the jubilee of the province,- visitors are certain to muster in stronger force thun Bver before. Every one with a touch oi sport in Us composition who can possibly spare the time and money will be in attendance, and judging by appearances will have a glorious time. It is a pity that the principal event of the year—the New Zealand Cvp — should be narrowed down to so poor a field, both in quality and numbers. When Advance and Renown were withdrawn and Seahorse left the colony, the race was robbed of a. lot of interest, and now two stronglyfancied competitors in Record Reign and tiant Ilario have had 1 to. be scratched owing to unsoundne«s. This leaves 11 likely starters. . Malafcua- has been doing fairly' well in his work of late, but he is not considered as forward as his admirers would like. Last week he was not galloped frotai Tjieaday till Saturday, and .then he moved rather short. During th» early part of this week suspicious) rumours were in circulation , about the Malua horse, but from what I can learn there ia - not extra cause lor alarm, although at the same time he could be doing a bit better itt his work than at present. Those who backed him: heavily, in tho winter are [holding tight to their money, and this is a good sign.. The Porirua- mare Tortulla has been going splendidly in her work since the Wanganui Meeting, and 'is said j to', be better now than she ever was. If so, her chance of scoring is an excellent one, , and her success would be an extremely popular one. When the weights appeared I picked her oufc-os having a fine chance, and preferred her to Advance, which opinion was; hold, as events proved, by her. party. Wjth Record Reign out and Malatara appearing mot at his best, I thank she will be my capital letter selection on the day if she trains on all right. Fulrnen is to be ridden by- R. Derrett. He, did not show to advantage at Dunedin a few weeks back, and will have to improve wonderfully in the interval to have a say. T. Taylor passed ■through Wellington this week to ride Miss Delaval, who will" now be Mr. D. M'Leod's representative. The little mare was stopped in her preparation at Ellerslie, and may lack' condition on tho day otherwise I would hold) her in respect, for she ia a game ?bib of stuff and a stayer. Dundas can undoubtedly gallop if in the humour, and he has been recording some good gallops at Riccarton. The Great Autumn win»er usually plays an important part in the New Zealand Cup, and Dundas may do so this year. But I like an honest horse for a severe two-mile journey,, and I have my doubts as to Dundas's soundness, Djin-Djin has caused E. Cutts a lot oi trouble owing to a sore ■heel, and his preparation has in t consequence been patchy. Ideal' was one of my early- selections^ and the little Dreadnought mare must not be despised. She is reported to be in good nick, and will have the services of a capable horseman in J. Gallagher. Skobeloff will be Mr. Stead's 'hope, and it- he runs up to his private form should have a change, although on Wanganui Clip running Tortulla appears to hold hint safe. Strathnairn's mile a*»d a quarter last week in 2niin 12seo has caused him to come into the market. His owner supported him for a couple of thousand. He will have to show better form than he has ever done< so far in public to ' win a New Zealand Cup, and I can't say I am. partial to his chaucej Brooklet's sister Materoa is in light enough, but on her Hawkes Bay running is likefy to be found wanting at the business end. Huku ran fourth in .last year's Cup. He has been putting in good work at Riccarton, and is regarded as. .a fail' outsider. With all the candidates at Riccarton next week reports of the morning gallops will be eagerly look- j ed forward to, and perhaps the winner may be sifted .out more easily, but at present* the race presents a very open aspect. The trio which I fancy moyfc are Malatua, Tortulla, and Ideal, three of my early fancies, and the best of them on the day might be TORTULLA. The beat race of the first day's racing from a spectator's point of view is likely to be the Stewards' Handicap, with its seventeen acceptors, amongst which are some of the fastest sprinters in the land — gallopers like Blazer, Boreas, Jabber, Goldspur, Benzoin and Co. "Additional interest will be given to the contest owing to the heavy double wagering ia connection with the race. Record Rejgn's withdrawal has knocked the bottom out of a lot of doubles, but some stronglybacked, combinations are still alive. Those most in request for the Stewards are St. Denie, Goldspur, Ostiak, Formosan, and Paladin. The Porirua stable has two representatives — Boreas and Ostiak— and Jenkins will have the choice as to which he will ride. At the weights Ost'iak looks to have the best chance it he goes on all right. Sfc. Denis' is the favourite pick at Riccarton, and at 7st 131b he seems extremely well in. Goldspur is not doing muck work on the track, but his party are confident. Formosan is a strong tiou them pick, and Mr. Stead's colt must fee held in respect. Jabber pulled up sore at Hastings, but he is now reported to have shaken ■ the soreness off. To pick the winner in three I would name St. Denis, Osfciak, and' Formosan. • Looking over the handicaps for the minor events on the first day's programme, Cavolierio strikes me as the winner of the Hurdle Race. Next to him Whetu seems the best. 1 care most for Cora Linn (lOst 31b), The Spinner (9st 131b), and Spider (9st 131b), in the Riccarton Welter ; . and Cameo (12sb 71b) in tho Ladies' Purse. . The Derby looks a really good thing for Renown, and at weight-for-oge he should stretch Advance's neck in the Canterbury and Exhibition Cups. It will probably be a good fight between the pair, but I thing the Porirua horse will just about "get there." The .Welcome Stakes candidates are practically unknown. Mr. Stead has a ha^py knack of supplying the winner of this event, and has three representatives on this occasion — Field Jiattery, Cruciform, and Menshikoff. Still, from all accounts Indian Queen is ( an uncommonly good filly, and a backer can't go far wrong in supporting the full sister to last year's Welcome Stakes winner.
