THE BURNHAM STABBING CASE.
» . [BY TIU-i?CRAI>H — PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, September. At the Magistrate's Court J:6 - day, Henry Cunningham was again remanded for a week on a charge of stau^in^ T. Archey, at Burnham, on. 30th August ; Archey still being unable to appear. Dr. Symes gave evidence to the effect that the wound was still open, and the patient got very little sleep. A curious complication arose over the question of counsel. Mr. Donnelly had been acting on accused's behalf so far, and appeared again this morning. Mr. Joynt, however, also appeared for the accused, having been retained by the Minister of Education. Mr. Donnelly objected to Mr. Joynt's appear&nce. He said that he appeared with Cunningham's consent, and -that the Minister of Education had no right to ask any counsel to act for prisoner. Mr. Joynt, however, argued that the Minister of Education was in the opsition of a guardian to the boy, and that it was clearly his duty to make arrangements. Mr.- Stringer, for the prosecution, suggested that both should appear, but this did not seem to please the rival counsel. The Bench said that Mr. Joynt had satisfactorily explained his appearance, and the question was left over till the case came up again.
