MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS,
* WELLINGTON CITY. The elections yesterday in connection with the three vacancies in the City Council resulted in the re-election of Councillor Tolhurst for Thorndon Ward and Councillor Barber for Te Aro Ward, and in the return of the .Rev. W. A. Evans for Cook Ward, vice the Hon. f! H. Fraser, who has retired from municipal life. The polling for the Cook and Te Aro Wards was very slow until 5 o'clock. Between that hour and 6 o'clock, when the polls closed, there was a great rush of burgesses to record their votes, and the Returning Officer (Mr. James Ames) and his assistants at the various booths were kept as busy as bees. The following are the results of the elections in connection with the suburban boroughs : — KARORI. F. J. M'Donald, 161; F. J. Lissington, 150 j J. F. Spiers, 146 ; G. Thomas, 116. The first-named three were reelected. ONSLOW. North Ward — R. Hannah (retiring member), 71 ; H. W. Lloyd, 43. South Ward — Alex. Neely (retiring member), 118; G. C. Cooke, 23. East Ward— J. Gardner, 64 ; J. Thompson, 36. MELROSE. Ohiro Ward— John Brown, 81; John Collins, 68. LOWER HUTT. J. Brasell, 127; R. Stevens, 123; F. C. Mathews, 105; J. Ward, 96; T. P. Allen, 75. Messrs. Brasell, Stevens, and Mathews were the successful candidates. Mr. Stevens was one of the retiring Councillors. The defeated candidates (Messrs. Ward and Allen) were also retiring Coun- ! cillors. PETONE. ! South Ward —J. G. A. Castle (reelected, 104; R. W. Short, 54; S. Carter, 22. West Ward— H. D. Baker, 77; H. Udy, 45 ; C. H. Gough, 43. North-east Ward — W. B. Nicholson, 59; Louisa Raby (late sitting member), 52 ; T. Price, 35. Mr. T. Price sat in the last Council for West Ward, but on this occasion decided to contest the seat for the Northeast Ward, in which Mrs. Raby defeated him by five votes at the time of her election.
