THE DRAMATIC STUDENTS IN COMEDY. Last night's audience at the Opera House was larger than that of the previous evening, and the performers were given ample evidence ol the audience's appreciation of their playing of the lively comedy "Modern Wives." The play went withi the utmost animation throughout its three acts, Mr. H. E. Nicholls and Miss Newtown, as Mr. and Mrs. Chubb, receiving able support from all the other members of the company in unravelling the amusing complications. "Old Cronies" was ,also repeated by Messrs. Clifford Walker, and Morris Fox. This evening a change of bill is to be made, T. W. Robertson's classical comedy "School" being the piece underlined. "School," which is) a popular play in the Old Country, has not been seen in Wellington since 1886. It is bright and amusing, and possesses the peculiar charm of pure comedy. The caste contains eighteen characters, including a bevy of sachool girls, pupils at Dr. Sutcliffe's Academy. Mr. H. E. Nicholls takes the part of the pedagogue, Mr. Morria Fox represents Beau Farintosh, Mr. Bastin will appear as Mr. Knix, and Mr. A. W. Newton as Jack Poyntz. .Misu Newton takes the part of Naomi Tighe, Miss Jessie Newton that of the doctor's wife, and Miss Geraldine Henry will represent Bella. A most enjoyable performance should result. Lord Ranfurly and suite are to be present this evening. The recenfc stormy weather affected neither the performers nor tho audiences at the Exchange Hall last night. The fine singing oi Mr. Arthur Hahn, tho comicalities of Messrs. Frank Yorko and Bob Hall, and the singing and dancing of thfc De Vellas and'the other members of the company won frequent applause. The usual change of programme is to be made to-mom>w evening, when Miss Trixie Le Mar, a song and dance specialist, will appear with the company. Mr. Will Stevens is as popular as ever at the Choral Hall, where the Bijou Company continues to entertain large audiences. Mr. Dave Caston is also popular in songs and dances. On Monday evening Mi&3 Rose Belmont is to be heard for the first time at the hall in ballads, and Messrs Lennoui, Hyman, and Lennon, acrobats and contortionists, will also mako their first appearance. At' St. John's Schoolroom last evening an entertainment in aid of the To Aro School FuncU waa given by the scholars. Among the most interesting items on the pro-gramme were a fancy song and dance, and scarf drill by infant girls, and a representation of King Canute and his courtiers,, by the infants. Another well-re-ceived item was gun drill by the infant boys in khaki. There waa a good attendance despite the wretched weather. The Wesleyan Literary and Debating Society held its weekly meeting in the Taranaki-street Classroom last evening, the Rev. W. C. Oliver being in the ohair. A mock Parliamentary election was held, Messrs. E. L. Burgess, E. J. Harvey, and H. Hurrell were proposed as candidates, and made 1 speeches propounding their views on various questions. On the vote being taken^ Mr. Harvey was declared elected. Next Thursday evening the society's annual elocutionary competition will take place. The weekly meeting of the Literary and Debating Society of the jvlarist Brothers' ochools, Old Boys' Association, was held last evening, Mr. John Kays in the chair. The evening was devoted to original papers, some of which evoked much discussion. Mr. T. Lawlor has given a prize for literature. Next Thursday, "Readings from Various Authors" will be taken. There was a fair attendance at the Petono Bulb Show last evening, where musical items were contributed by Mrs. R. C. Kiric,- Messrs. Hector, Mr. and Mrs. Adams, and O. D. Anison. Three tableaux ai ranged by Mrs. Bowman were also shown representing the attack and repulse of the Boers at New Zealand Hill. Notwithstanding the unfavourable Aveather, it is expected" chat the sho^ will provo a financial success.
