THE A.M.P. SOCIETY. A LIVELY MEETING ABOUT THE EXTENSION SCHEME.

[press association.] SYDNEY, 20th July. The meeting of the A.M. P. Society's shareholders to take the necessary steps to amend the bylaws to permit an extension of the business to England was a lively gathering. A large number of leading citizens who opposed the proposal were in attendance. Sir Joseph Abbott presided. Mr. Ashton, a member of Parliament, said no useful purpose would be served by discussing the question on its merits when it was known that Sir Joseph Abbott and Mr. Littlejohn, two of the directors, had 105,000 proxy votes in their pockets in favour of the proposal. The. Hon. J. H. Want wished the directors to adjourn the meeting till after the meeting on 24th August — when a plain "yes" or "no" was ' to be given — say. to 10th October. This was moved and^carried by un overwhelming majority, but the Chairman announced that a ballot was demanded, and stated that a -ballot of personal votes for or Bgainst the adjournment would be taken on Monday next, and the proxy votes on the following Thursday. > This statement produced an uproar, Mr. Want, turning to the audience, called out. "Before you go. remember how you have been treated here to-day," and announced that he would call a meeting at the Town Hall in protest.
