AUCKLAND, 29 th May. At a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board, a letter was received from Messrs. Donald and Edenborougb, pointing out, on behalf of the fruit importers, that the great expense importers are put to by Government inspection and fumigation of fruit was a special reason why the Board should give every consideration to the trade. Mr. AY. H. Grove wrote stating that owing to the cost of hauling, and through there not being a proper shed, shippers were put to such loss that if there was a repetition of the same circumstances they would be driven to getting a steamer to run to Wellington. The Harbourmaster, although admitting the fruit trade suffered from want of shed accommodation, denied that it suffered from want of consideration on his part. Mr. Napier said the letters showed that the Board's berthage accommodation was inadequate. The fumigation of fruit was likely to become a burning question in Auckland. The matter was now engaging the attention of the Government, and it was likely the fumigation shed would be much enlarged. It would be a most serious matter for Auckland if the fruit trade were to depart from the city.
