DEATH OF MR. H. P HIGGIN SON.
We regret to announce the' death of Mr. H. P. Higginson, M. Inst., CX., who designed the Manawatu Railway , and superintended its construction. Tne deceased gentleman had been suffcr^r.g from ill-health for several, years, 'ad his death, which took place al his re:.idence in Hobson-street yesterday, wrs not unexpected. Mr. Higginson was a native o£ Yorkshire, and received his education at the Collegiate School, Leicester. Hq> was articled as au engineer to Sir W. Fairbairn, of Manchester, and in 1867 he became a member of the Institute of Civil Engineer.*, London. Before ho came to New Zealand he was engaged for three years in railway construction in Russia, and for five yeajs he was connected with hydraulic works in India, and he also occupied the portion of Government Railway Engineer in the Mauritius. In 1872 he arrived in New Zealand to take up the office of Superintending Engineer to the Publio Works Department, and held the appointment for five years. He then went into private practice in Dunedin, and amongst many important public works which he designed while a resident of that city were the Waimea Plains Railway, the Balclutha Traffic Bridge, the Lyttelton Waterworks, and the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge. When the Manawatu Railway Company was , formed Mr. Higginson was selected to build the line, and he carried out the work with his usual ability. In 1889 he succeeded the late Mr. J. R. George as manager and engineer of the Wellington Gas Company, and continued to hold the dual positions until ill-health compelled his retirement about two years ago. The deceased gentleman, who was 62 years of age, leaves a •widow and family. His funeral took place this morning, and was largely attended.
