CRICKET.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. The second round of tho senior championship matches was started on Saturday afternoon in perfect weather and on fast wickets. At the end of the afternoon's play Midland had the beat of the deal with the Phoenix, while Wellington stood in a better position thun the Old Boys. MIDLAND v. PHOENIX. Phoenix winning the toss sent its opponents into the field, Benbow and Haldane taking strike to tho bowling of Upham and Tucker. Haldane quickly came to grief, and Benbow soon followed suit, Tucker bagging both wickets. A stand by Midlane and Halley raised the score to 32, when Midlane, who was batting nicely, was thrown out by Tucker, the fieldsman returning the ball very smartly. Midland's contribution included a superb hit for 6 off Upham. Another etfeotive stand followed the association of Waters and Halley, which brought about several changes in the bowling. At 81 Halley retired after playing a fairly good aud steady innings for 25. Ten runs later Waters departed with 27 to his credit, run out. Burton played clean and wristy cricket for his 26 not out. The Phoenix had a big tail, the last four wickets only adding seven runs. Bush, Burns, Gates, and Wells were all credited with ducks. Wells was dismissed by a smart catch by Robertson in the outfield, and Stephenson effected a hard left-handed catch at point which dismissed Bush. Tucker, who carried off the bowling honours, fielded splendidly, and was responsible for the dismissal of three men by his quick and accurate returns. Stephenson, Upham, Robertson, Reid, and Hickson performed serviceable work in the field. Quee and Williams started batting operations for the Midlanders, the latter, who was never at home to Wells and Benbow, getting clean bowled by Benbow without scoring. Quee registered 7 when he was caught by Bush off Wells. Once more Tucker proved his sterling worth, and displayed consistent form, knocking up 39 before Waters bfroke through his defence. Hickson and Robertson defied all the changes of bowling to break their partnership, and were still at the wickets when time was called with useful contributions of 32 and 23 respectively. Following are the scores : —

• OLD BOYS v. WELLINGTON. Old Boys had first strike, but failed to use it to the bes^ advantage. Kirkcaldie and Cole batfe'd well for 19 and 20, the latter making a fine drive off Hales for 6. The cricket exhibited by a majority of the team was of a "scratchy" description. Redmond and Hales divided the wickets, each obtaining excellent averages.
