OUR DEFENCE FORCES.
It' will bo remembered that about 12 months ago so much dissatisfaction was cuuhcd among the Otago Hussars and other mounted troops by tho calling iv of tho carbines, with tho evident view of rearming the men with rifles, that the men wero on the point of disbanding. Major Robin and others urgod the men to wait until the intentions of the Commandant were definitely announced. Tho advice wiw acted upon, and now it appears (say the Otago Daily Times) that all mounted troops ar« to be armed with the carbine. The following is^au extract from the an-, nual report of' the Commandant :t— "'The Martini-Enfield rifle and carbine having practically tho same range, and bouig equally powerful weapons, it has been decided to arm all the mounted corps with thu carbine, it being a handier weapon to carry when viding " (Jovernmonti parades of the Wellington Rillo Battalion corps will bu held as fo.lows during August . — C'ty Rifles :iud Zealandia JUilios, 7th: Kelburno Rifles and College Ititles, Bth j Guards and Cycle Coips, 10th ; Civil Service Rilles and Post and Telegraph Rilles, 11th. The (Jarrhson Band will parade on the 10th and also on the 21st, and on tho latter date thuro will be v parade of tho Wellington Battalion.
