(Received May 13, 0-15 a.m.) il London, 12th May. Play Avas resumed this morning, iv cloudy weather. The attendance was again large. The wicket behaved queerly, the balls being affocted by a heavy dew which occurred last night, and shooting most erratically. The Australians were all disposed of for 144 runs. The further scores were ;— Gregory, c Russell, b Young „ „, 21 Jielly, b Meade „ ... 16 Trumble, b Young ... „, fM Q Layer, c and b Meade „, „, ... 9 Jones, b Young ... ... „, ... 6 M'Leod, not out , ... 20 BoAvling analysis.— Bull, 2' for 30, Mead 3 for 58, Young 4 for 42. [The batting scores cabled only account for nine batsmen and 120 runs. The missing batsmen ar<c Noble and jprumper. The boAvling analysis explains 130 runs as being debited to; the boAvlers, and 14 extras Avould make up the difference.] Gregory was smartly taken behind f;he wickets. , Trumble Avas bowled off his pad. The fourth wicket fell >vith the score at 94, and the seventh at 111 . The catch which dismissed Layer was a very easy one. The Essex team, in its second innings, has lost three Avickets for 49 rans. The score is : — Essex. — Second innings. Owen, c Iredale, b Jones 6, Carpenter, c Kelly, b Trumble ... 'A Perrin, c Iredale, b Jones 0 Turner, not out 25, M'Gahey, no.fc out „, 15 Total .' ...' ... 49 Extra ... ... „. ... 1 At the Luncheon hour Essex had lost one wicket for 8 runs. The second wicket fell without any increase in the score. OAven and Perrin -were both taken in the slips by smart catches. M'Uahey and Turner played a lucky innings, each giving tAvo changes, which Avere declined. Jones's pace Ayas tremendous. [Only tAvo- previous games have taken place betAveen the Australians and the County of .Essex. Blackburn's team in 1893 played a draAyn game, the scores being:— Australians, 250 and 141; and Essex, 237 a.nd 32 for one wicket. For tho Cornstalks, Bannerman with' 34 and 29, Bruce 56 and 5, and Turner 27 and 18, Avero the principal rungetters, lyhttfi on tho other side Carpenter made 42 and 7, Hailey 38 (not out), and OAven 36. The feature of the match, hoAvevor, Avas tho splendid boAvling of Mead, of the County team, who secured in first innings 9 fpr 136, and in the second 8 for 69. Trumble, for the visitors, bagged 6 for 87. Trott's team had no difficulty in anexing a victory in 1896, the margin being 7 Avickets. The Essex men ran up 166 (Lucas 46, Perrin 35, and M'Gahey -g0) and 149 (Carpenter 51, Perrin and Bull 20 each) ; against which the colonials put together 223 (Hill 73, Gregory 34, und Kelly 29) and 93 for 3 Avickets (Iredale 43 and Trott 20, both not out). The best boAvling Avas done by Trumble, who captured 10 Avickets for 108. On the present occasion the Essex skipper Avas fortunate enough to Avin the toss, and the first innings of 199 of the County men is a very creditable total, the scoring being mainly done by the first and last Avickets. Lucas, the top notche-r for the Home team, is a very old player, having taken part in the first test match played on English soil — viz., in 1880. In that game he Avas, next to Grace, the highest scorer on his sid p making 55 and 2. Tremble's bowling stands out prominently for the Australians, and his performance in securing 8 for 79 is an excellent one. Three times last season for his colony he captured 8 wickets in one innings, so that the feat is by no means a neAV one or him. At the close of the first day's play neither side had gained any advantage.]
