A UCKLA ND RIFL E ASSOCIATION MEETING.
<► — [by .telegraph — press association.] Auckland. This Day. The Auckland Rifle Association meeting commenced yesterday. The Star Cup, Herald Cup, and Avondale Match Avere fired, all three being Avon by Major White, Avho leads the championship aggregates by 20 points. Competitors AA r ere alloAved to use either the .303 rifle or MartiniHenry, and the results of the shooting impressed all with the superiority of the small bore AA'eapon. The absence of young shots from the numerous volunteer companies noAv existant here was subject of general comment. Although there are two matches for their special benefit only one of the neAv companies was represented. The chief scores for the Herald Cup, seven shots at 300 and 500 yards, were : — Major White, 63 ; Henderson, 61 ; C.P O. Spinley, 60; Sergt. Maingay, 59. Star Cud, seven shots at 300, 500, and 600 yards".— White, 94 ; Maingay, 90 ; E. Buchanan, 89. Avondale Match, seven shots at 600 and 700 yards.— White, 65; Cox, 57; Carlson, 56. The meeting will be continued this afternoon.
