Captain Neville, of the Tarawera, which arrived alongside the Queen's Wharf at 3.40 pm yesterday from Sydney, reports having had a fair share of the recent bad weather- while-in the Tasman Sea. She is to take a loud of coal froih Newcastle to Axickland. Captain Holm has taken charge of the vessel. The American schooner Novely left Melbourne on the 30fch January for Westport, to load coal for Honolulu under charter to the Westport Coal Co. More than ordinary interest was taken in the appointment of a, deputy harbourmaster for the port of Hobart. Sixteen applications were received for the position, and the choice was made by ballot at the Marine Board mooting. Captain Creese and Captain Davis each received four votes. The former was elected on the casting vote of the Master Warden. Captain Creese is at present master of the barque Kassa. A heavy sea at the Heads prevented the Mana from getting further than the lighthouse on her way to Paten, last night. She returned to the wharf, and sails this evening. Ou Tuesday afternoon the Wairoa left Motueka for Wellington, but the heavy southerly gale kept her back until 7.45 this morning. She ran for shelter in Cabbage and Ohau Bays. Captain Eicketts reports the schooner Annie Hill making for Guard's Bank on Wednesday morning, and two other schooners hovo-t.o in the Strait. Cable advice to the Union Co. states that the Rippingham Grange, of the Grange line of steamers, is due in Wellington, from Tchio (New Caledonia), on her way to London about the middle of next month for a supply of bunker coal. The Otarama will take some 7500 carcases from the Aramoho Freezing Works, Wanganui. The Huia is to act as lighter. The original instructions to keep back the Boiomabana at Lyttelton until Saturday were cancelled late yesterday afternoon, as she made a. better trip from Wellington to the Southern port than was anticipated.
