BRITISH POLITICS.
THE LIBERAL PARTY AND IMPERIAL EXPANSION. NEXT SESSION'S PROGRAMME. [PKESS ASSOCIATION.] London, 28th January. The Right Hon. H-. H. Asquith (who was Secretary of State in Mr. Gladsone's last Administration), in the course of a speech at Darwin, said that in his opinion ninety out of every hundred members of the Liberal Party were " Imperial Expansionists." He urged that friendship should be maintained with France, and a working agreement entered into with Russia. The Right Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, speaking at Birmingham, said that the next session of the British Parliament would be devoted to the consideration of local government, Secondary Education Bill, and workmen's dwellings. The rapidly-approaching federation of the colonies would, Mr. Chamberlain added, make Australia a nation. All the colonies were helping to bring the greater federation — the federation of the Empire —within the sphere of practical politics.
