NEW SOUTH WELSHMEN IN LONDON,
* [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] London, 27th January. At the annual New South Wales dinner held to-day at the Hotel Metropole, there was a large attendance of former colonists. Admiral Sir Nathaniel Bowden-Stnitb, who was formerly in command of the Australian squadron, said that Sydney afforded a magnificent naval base, and was a situation capable of easy defence. The Earl of Jersey, an ex-Governor of New South Wales, who presided over the gathering, in proposing the health of the colouy, lauded the generous hospitality always shown by its inhabitants. Amidst every difficulty, he said, the colony had maintained its high reputation, and iv his opinion Sydney should be chosen as the capital of Federated Australia. The Pacific cable question was one of enormous importance to the colony. Itt conclusion, he ventured the opinion tIM no portion of the British race was ahle to excel New South Wales in benefiting the Empire. Earl Beaucharap, the newly-appointed Governor of the colony, was present, and received an enthusiastic greeting.
