MR. CLELAND CHAMPION FOB THE YEAR. [B"S' TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dttnedin, 29th December. At the Chess Congress L. A. Cleland and J. Mouat met in the fourth round. Mouat adopted the French defence, and Iceland mated on the 31st move. This win makes Cleland the champion of New Zealand for 1899. / At the annual meeting of the Congress a motion was carried expressing deep refrefc at the death of Mr. Henry Hookam. Mr. Justice Denniston was elected President, and other office-bearers were chosen as follows : — Vice-Presidents, Messrs. W. R. Cooke (Christchurch), D. Stenhouse and Cleland (Dunedin), the Hon. F. Arkwright and C. W. Benbow (Wellington), J. M'Lennan and A. Millar (Auckland); Hon. Secretary, Mr. F. K. Kelling (Wellington). It was resolved to hold the next Congress at Wellington on a date to be decided by the Council.
