A well-known figure in military movements in Wellington, Sergt.-Mnjor W. J. Jeffreys, of 1) Bailer}-, died early this morning, after a short illness of five days, lie was an enthusiastic volunteer, and had been actively connected with the movement for over 20 years.' Part of his experience was gained in Canterbury, where he was a member of the 3D Battery, under Captain J. C. Marl in, the present Captain of the Slar Boaling Club Submarine Corps. He has been a member of the Wellington Batlery for about 12 years, and was exceedingly popular among his comrades and volunteers generally. The deceased was an engineer by trade, having served his time with Messrs. John Anderson & Co., Christchurch. Up till about 18 months ago he was in the employ of Messrs. S. Dauks & Son, and since then he has worked in the foundry of Messrs. Lulce & Son. In former years he was also an ardent footballer, and will be remembered as a member of the old Union Clnb. The cause of death was congestion of the lungs supervening on influenza. He leaves a wife but no family. The funeral, which takes place ou Wednesday afternoon, will be a military one. There was a moderate audience at the Exchange Hall on SaUirdaj- evening, when the variety entertainment provided by Miss j Millie Clark, Sid Luella, Messrs. Sheldon Kindle}', W. A. Salmon, Smith, Young, Hill, Stewart, and the Eoselle Party of Acrobats was repeated. Miss Q. Cope's plain and fane} 7 dress ball is postponed indefinitely.
