ENTUKKD OUTWARDS September '26— Penguin, ss, 517 tons, Bernech, for Lyttellon. JblerJ ens, Llislop, Andeibon, Polroy, Kenny, flalley, Master Cliristcseu ; 17 sleernj-e THE OVERDUE BARQUE LAKE ONTARIO. Captain Murray, of the, barque Akaroa, which arrived from Liverpool yesterday, did not .see anything on the voyage out of the overdue barque Luke Ontario, now 153 dnys out from Liverpool to Wellington. The Akaroa reached Liverpool four days lifter the Lake Ontario had sailed, und was se^'en weeks loading nl that port. The overdue vessel would probably be deeply laden. The Akaroa had only about -ift 4iin freeboard coming out from Liverpool, and for the last four weeks of the voyage she was practically under water the whole time, while the crew had to crawl along the rig'ginqr to (jet from forward to aft. With such an experience as this it is hanlly to be wondered if the Lake Ontario has come to grief. It. is the opinion of nautical people that it is time s6methinfj was done to stop the system which allows vessels to leave Liverpool so deeply laden, and that an amendment should bo made in the Act which permits the existence of i emulations which are a menace to both crew and property. Captains of vessels have, it. is said, warmly protested, but hare been told in reply either to proceed to sea or jyive the command up to somebody else who is prepared to take the risk. It is to facilitate loading operations at New Plymouth, owint,' to insufficient berthing- accommodation, that Die Herald i.s to snil for that, port and Greymoutb this evening, instead of tomorrow, ns timetabled. The first lot of wool of the new season's shearing- readied "Wellington yesterday, the Queen of the South linviiijj brought 2S bales from Mr John M'Menamen's station at, Ter.iwhiti, consigned to Messrs Levin and Co (Limited). The wool will be shipped by the Eaugatira, to catch the November sales in London. Favourable weather was experienced by the Beautiful Star in working the East Coast stations. The steamer is making- a special trip this evening to Kaikoura, Cheviot (with 20,000 ft timber), and Lyttelton. In connection with the visit of the barque Aknrnay it is noteworthy that four years ago the vessel was un.ible to get a. full cargo in the colony until fully twelve rnontbs had elapsed, while she remained in Lyttelton last year for 14 months before securing sufficient freight to despatch, her to London. The local office is advised that the Monowai left Sydney at. 2pm on Saturday. She is due in Wellingtbu late on Wednesdiiy afternoon. The signalmen at. Beacon Hill report that the brig-antine Sarah nud Mary passed the Heads at 1 pm to-day j bound westward.
