OUR DEFENCE FORCES. ANOTHER WELLINGTON FORTIFICATION,

A short time ago a notification appeared in the Gazette that the Government had reserved for defence purposes a portion of the heights of Island Bay. The reserve in question cousists of the top of the high hill between the hotel and the cave in which the Hermit lived for so many years, and on it wbe Defence Department intends to place two quick-firing guns. A parade of the Civil Service Rifles took place last night, 51 of all ranks attending, and the company was put through battalion movements.

The Pacific Lodge of Druids will celebrate an oflioial visit by members of the Masterton Druids' Lod^e on the 7th prox. by a social J gathering in Whitaker's Hall. The visitors will bring their own orchestra of 18 performers, and as the local Druids are catering for all classes of visitors they should have a big attendance. Full particulars appear elsewhere. Gillies, of Thwaru, who is to conduct anniversary services at Kent-terrace Presbyterian Church on Sunday week, has also consented to give an evening's entertainment on Thursday next, entitled "Reminiscences in Rhyme of Life iv Otago in the Pif Lies." A synopsis is advertised. The Wellington Festival Choral Society announces the first of two special concerts. An organ recital will be given at St. Peter's Church on "Wednesday next. Mr. J. ODea, architect, invites tenders lor the erection of a residence in Woolcombestreet.
