... A Startling* Test . . . WELSBACH INCANDESCENT GAS LIGHT V. ELECTRICITY. €!oimipa,'Bra,ti've €?o$t 9 R<issMt /©*• SLigfotz us 6«s. is to 3-s* O^. IN order to test the quantity of Gas consumed by the Welsbach Incandescent Burner, which is coming so rapidly into use in Wellington, which is extensively used in Auckland, both for household and street-lighting purposes, and which is practically universal in Sydney, A Vest was made in Wellington on the evening of the Bth September last, and the results were recorded showing the relative cost of the Gas consumed by a Welsbach Burner in producing a givenfintensity of light as compared with the cost of electricity producing an exactly similar degree of illumination. Several gentlemen holding important official! positions in Wellington were present, and the test was carried out in the following manner :—: — A 50 Candle-power electric lamp was placed at a distance of 12 feet from a Welsbach Incandescent Gas Light. A mark at equal distances from the two lights was accurately fixed between them, and a white card was placed upright on the mark between the two lights. It was found that the light from the Incandescent Gas Lamp threw much the stronger shadow. The power of the Electric Lamp was then increased by the addition of a 16-candle power lamp, and the result was that the shadow thrown was then slightly in favour of the Electric Light, but the difference was so small that it was agreed to accept the final test as tantamount to equality. Subsequent examination of the quantities consumed of each illuminant gave the following comparison :—: — 1 66 Candle-power Electric Light, burning 24 hours Qs. fJtJcL 4f units, at lOd. per unit ... ... \J Uf 1 Welsbach Incandescent Gas Burner, giving a light equal to the above, and burning in 24 hours 85f cubic feet, at 6s. 3d. per 1000 cubic fil 3 A' feet ... ... ... ... Q7 The test, therefore, shows the startling difference between the respective cost of these methods of lighting, viz :—: — & SAVIKTG* of 3s. Oyd. per 24 hours upon every burner giving a light equal to 66 Candle-power, and even were the cost of Electricity to be reduced to Ud. per unit, the Welsbach Gas Burner would still show a Saving of over Is. 7d. per 24 hours for every Burner of 06 Candle-power. One of the Welsbach Incandescent Gas Burners suffices to brilliantly illuminate any ordinary room. It is a perfectly steady light, and can be readily affixed to any existing gas fittings. It Obviates all the Defects that have been alleged to accompany the use of Gas where in large establishments a very great number of burners are necessary. The principle of its construction ensures perfect combustion, so that there is no Vitiation of the Atmosphere, no I*ree Carbon is thrown off, and no injury is caused to Ceilings, Scrim, or Paper.
