A PUBLIC FANCY DRESS BALL TO THE EDITOR.

Sie — As you are doubtless aware, a large fancy dress ball is to be given in Government House on 27th October. Many of the privileged people who have received invitations have sent to England and Australia for fancy costumes, and the ball will probably be the most handsome function of the kind ever held iv the colony. No.vv, sir, does it not seem a pity that so many beautiful dresses should be imported and made just for one night ? There are many who have not been invited to Government House who would very much like to have an opportunity to see and admire these dresses. It is well known that a Nurses' Home is badly wanted at the Hospital. I would suggest that a public fancy dress ball be given (say a week after the one at Government House) with a view to raising funds to help erect the Nurses' Home or to aid some of our charities. If this suggestion were to receive a little encouragement from Government House there is no doubt that it would soon be enthusiastically taken up, and a considerable sum of money for a deserving purpose would result. In any case I hope more will be heard of the proposal, which I can only regret has not been made before, and over an influential signature. I am, &c, Harry P. Tuckey. Park-terrace, 2Bnd September, 1898.
