LOCAL AND GENERAL. _ * The three viticultural experts in the employ of the Department of Agriculture are making a minute examination of the vines iv the HaWkes Bay, Baj of Plenty, and "Whangarei districts. Traces of phylloxera have been discovered in some vineyards, but the disease has in no instance reached alarming proportions,- and it is hoped that steps which are to he taken in the early 6pring will thoroughly prevent it spreading. The Government is to be asked to place the sum of £200 on the Estimates for continuing the improvements to the channel of tha Wangauui Him,
