WAIRARA PA NE WS.

[by teleghapit—own cobrespondents.] Masterton, This Day. A youth named llenrv Osman was sentenced to three 111011 Lbs' imprisonment this morning for stealing a Match and chain from a Chinaman. A special meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night to deal with tenders for the £30,000 water and drainage loan. The offers, however, were below the sum required, and it was decided to set up a special committee to obtain information regarding the best means of raising the money. The opinion was expressed that owing to the fact that the rate of interest to be given had not been stated in the notice inviting tenders financial institutions did not care to touch the loan. The Mayor suggests that the Government be asked to lend the money under the Loans to Local Bodies Act at 4 per cent., or that the loan be placed on the London market direct. Mr. F. Mangnuson, of Whaketaki, schoolmaster, has been appointed assistant clerk to the borough, vice Mr. A. J. Hathaway, resigned. Samuel Kingdon, plumber, of Masterton, who recently, when engaged on some work for the Uorough Council, fell from ji ladder and broke a rib, also injuring his head, has now presented a claim for £19 to the Council under the Emploj'ers' Liability Act. Acting on legal advice the Council repudiates the claim, but last night decided to offer £6, without prejudice, as compassionate allowance. Kingdon was only casually employed.
