The military celebrated 4th July, the anniversary of tho Declaration of Independence, the United States flag being entwined with the British. This is regarded as a unique incident. A similar demonstration was made at Burlington, in the United States, 500 troops from Canada being present. (Received July 6, 9.30 a.m.) London, sth July. American society in Londou celebrated the anniversary of the American Independence with special fervour. [PER SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.] San Francisco, 15th June. Negotiations for the conclusion of reciprocity agreements with Great Britain are proceeding most satisfactorily. Mr. Day, Secretary of Slate, has cabled to Colonel Hay, United States Ambassador in London, his satisfaction at the prospective settlement of the various questions pending between the two.Governments, and it is expected that Lord Salisbury will promptly give his approval to the protocol. Russia has taken the subject up, and Germany is also working at the problem. Britons entertained Americans on 3rd June at a splendid banquet at the Hotel Cecil, London, called "an Anglo-Americau banquet. Six hundred people sat at the table under the draped British and American flags. The avowed object was the promotion of good fellowship. Among the speakers were the Bishop of Ripon, Lord Brassey, Sir Geo. W. Dcs Voeux, Earl Grey, and Professor Sir Frederick Pollock. The Daily Chronicle refers to the bauquet as a "remarkable gathering of men who are forces in the modern world/'.and says: " The dinner was the beginning of a movement which, unless wrecked by unforeseen mischance, must carry us far. It is important that all men, friends or foes, should realise that this movement has come to stay." Auckland. sth July. Mr. John Duthie says he was struck everywhere in passing through the States with the enthusiasm and cordiality witji which the prospect of an Anglo-American alliance was viewed.
