As Admiral Cervera would not come out of Santiago, Lieut, llobson and a volunteer crew of seven men under cover of darkness ran the big collier Merrimao into tho harbour on the 3rd June, swung her broadside across the channel, and torpedoed and Mink her under a terrible tire from the batteries and forts. llobson and his men lowed thodimry in which they left the Merrimac straight to Admiral Cervera's flagship, whero their courage was acknowledged by a cheer. Admiral Cervera sent a boat, under a while Hag, to Sampson, saying that tho men would be held as prisoners and treated as Spanish oflicers of rank till they woro exchanged.
