AUSTRALIAN.
Mr. D. O'Brien's cast-off Patriot, by Autonomy — Bangle, captured the Lawn Handic&p on the second day of the V.R.C. Grand National Meeting. He carried Bst
lib, and had the services of the English jockey, A. Brown, running the six furlongs in lmin ISsec, and he won easily. For his victory, Patriot has incurred a 31b penalty for the Caulfield Cup and 51b for the Melbourne Cup. This will bring his weights up to 7st 81b and 7st 9lb lcspectively. Catapaw, by Neckersgat— Cyclone, proved himself a useful animal by accounting for two events at th 6 ineetincr, securing the July Handicap on the second day in an easy mtiuner, leaving the mile behind him in lmin 45|sec. Catspaw is an ex -hurdler, and was purchased as a yearling for 3dirs. The V.R.C. National gathering resulted in a profit of about £700. Sunbeam, the dam of Beverley and Linburn, is dead. Loynlty and Trent are iv splendid health at Caulfield. Hayseed's V.R.C. Grand National is the third credited to the Mill Park stable, Eajrlet and ReJleap being previous winners. Mr. W. R Wilsou has bought in England a yearling colt by Amphion from Sandfly, by Isonoiny from Sandiway, by Doncaster from Clemence (granddam of Carbine). ' The English bred horse Positano (St. Simon— Ponza) has been quietly backed for a good stake for both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup at 100 to 4. Mr. C. F. Glasscock has written to the V.R.C. Committee complaining bitterly of the way the carcase of Larrikin was treated by the roughs on the flat after the horse had broken his neck in the Grand National Steeplechase. One of the cheapest horses running (says the Sydney Referee) is Pasquin, by Grand Flaneur— Squib, who won the Stewards Mile at the Moorefield races on the 10th inst. In 1891 he was sold as a yearling to Mr. J. M'Elhone for 40gs, but owing to an accident was turned out. Later on be was sent with a draft of horses to be sold at the Camperdown yard, and was then bought for £10 by his present owner. First of all he was broken into harness, but wheu his breeding was looked up and he was found to be quite sound it was decided to train him. When his racing career is over it may be that Pasquiu will be the more useful because ' he goes in harness.' At the Singapore races held last month several Australian horses figured prominently. Fairy Tale was successful in two events ; and Locky was successful in the Singapore Derby and Club Cup. The Maiden Plate was won by Leihcol, who is by Locbiel. , Mersey, the dam of Carbine and Carnage, is in foal to Bill of Portland.
