PETONE BORO UGH CO UNCIL.

♦ An ordinary meeting of the Petohe| Borough Council ' was held last evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr. E. C. Kirk), Councillors Mothes, Corner, Ballinges, 'Cook, Austin, Findlay, Fraser, Castle, and L'ttsty. ' Mr. J. Bodgers's resignation of the position of Banger was accepted. .It was decided , to invite applications for the offi.ee. Messrs. M'Grath and Lamberg, contractors for the Nelson-street culvert, wrote asking that the road be closed during the progress of the work, and notifying that they had stopped the work for a few days owing to non-delivery of bricks. The first portion of the letter was agreed to, the Mayor remarking that it was absolutely necessary that no time should be lost in pushing the work on. T/Jie recommendations of the Works Committee, as published last evening, were considered. At clause 2 Councillor Ballinger moved an amendment that Mr. Cowie's salary be £225 per annum in lieu of £250 a* recommended. The amendment was lost. In regard to clause 3,tenders for cleaning Moran's Creek, the Mayor, Councillors Mothes, Ballinger, and Findlay, were appointed a committee to consider and accept a tender. On clause 6 (as to providing Engineer's instruments'), tne Mayor stated that he found upon enquiry that it was the custom for similar boroughs to Petone either to provide the instruments or make an allowance for them. On the motion of Councillor Findlay, it was decided to purchase a level and staff already under offer, svibject to the price being agreed to by the Engineer. In reference to clause 7 (quotation for culvert), Mr. Cowie reported that he had received an offfer to' construct the 32 feet of culvert required and fix it in position for £14. Consideration was deferred. Clause 8, concrete blocks for standard survey. Mr. Cowie was directed to confer with the District Surveyor, and also procure sufficient blocks to enable the work to b« proceeded with, and make such arrangements as may be necessary for the »upply of the balance required as cheaply as possible. The report, as amended, was then adopted. The Mayor reported that the executors of the late J. S. Mannic ? had agreed to pay £50 on condition that the Council complete the extension of Victoria-street as originally agreed upon. Councillor Lusty moved that tenders be (jailed for the work, including the drainage. Thii Was agreed to, tenders to be in by the 28th inst. An additional 14 days' leave of absence was granted to; the Town Clerk (Mr. J. Hester) on account of ill-health. The Mayor called attention to a recommendation of Mr. Maxwell that flush tanks be provided for flushing the drains. He (the Mayor) suggested that in lieu of these a suitable water-cart be procured, that would, in addition to being used for this purpose, be available for watering .the streets. Consideration was deferred until next Works Committee meeting. The Finance Committee reported the bank overdraft on 30th November on General Account to be £382; credit to Drainage Account, £164; debtor Street Improvement Account, £10. Accounts were passed for payment as follows :— On General Account, £131 ; Drainage Account, £202 ; Street Improvement Account, £168.
